Racial Justice Investing (RJI)

In order to align with the movement for racial justice, the finance & investing industry needs structural transformation.

To imagine structural solutions, people who work in public and private markets must have a deep understanding of the construction of racial capitalism and how it persists. Professionals in capital markets must go beyond declared statements and intentions to address how the current financial system causes and resources harmful actions and behaviors.

Racial Justice Investing (RJI) is a group of investors, asset owners, and business leaders who seek structural solutions and are taking action towards racial justice within organizations, as well as in engagements with portfolio companies. RJI was formed to:

  • Elevate understanding of the harmful relationship between the systems of racism and capitalism in the U.S.;

  • Identify the role of socially responsible investors in working for racial justice both in our own institutions and firms, and at the companies we engage;

  • Advocate for policies which promote racial justice and address the role of wealth and capital in ongoing injustice;

  • Hold companies accountable for how their policies and practices impact people of color, including via shareholder proposals, company dialogues, interactions with asset managers, and more;

  • Center the perspectives and expertise of people of color, especially Black people; and

  • Build coalition with and work in accountability to racial justice activists and organizers.
