CHIMES: Community & Household Infant-Maternal Exposure Study

CHIMES

is a longitudinal pilot project, led by caregivers and researchers from Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst, investigating the impact of the environment — beginning in pregnancy — on maternal and child health.

By studying how structural racism — often reflected in inequitable environmental and housing conditions — affects maternal and child health outcomes, the care and research team hopes to shed light on the impact of environmental & neighborhood exposures on the health of both mothers and their children.

Goals

  • Learning with mothers and children at Elmhurst Hospital in Jackson Heights, Queens, to reimagine health through community-engaged and solutions-oriented research.

  • Understand needs and perceptions through bi-directional engagement with community groups.

  • Characterize place-based inequities on maternal and child health.

  • Carry out novel impactful science to support implementation of strategies to accelerate equitable health gains.
