Museums acquistions don't serve justice

  • Work by female-identifying artists account for 11% of acquisitions at 31 U.S. museums from 2008-2020. Women represent 50.5 percent of the United States population (as well as the global population); thus, they are underrepresented in collections by almost a factor of five.

  • Work by Black American women account for 0.5% of acquisitions at those same U.S. art museums. Black American women represent 6.6% of the country’s population, meaning they are underrepresented in U.S. museums by a factor of 13.
